Buying to Belong: Youth and the Allure of the Metaverse

As social gaming platforms like Roblox and Fortnite surpass social media’s popularity among kids, our new report using focus group data from young players shows how the pervasive marketing of virtual goods in those games exposes children to harm.

Our report shows that platforms like Roblox and Fortnite aggressively promote virtual goods — including avatars, skins, pets, clothing and other items that players can purchase and use — pressuring kids to spend huge amounts of time and money on the games and exposing them to bullying, financial harm, and damage to their physical and mental health.

Advocating for kids’ online safety 

The Kids Online Safety Act is landmark legislation that will protect children from online harms like cyberbullying, sextortion and suicide. Thanks to advocacy from Fairplay and our network of survivor parents, the bill passed the Senate 91-3!

How 20 families are turning their pain into action

Fairplay and David’s Legacy Foundation created the initiative Parents for Safe Online Spaces, sharing the stories of families who lost their children to the most insidious social media harms perpetuated by Big Tech’s algorithms. Refusing the let any other families experience this devastating loss, these parents have forged together, urging lawmakers to pass KOSA— a bill that would make tech companies change their platforms and literally save kids’ lives.
